An avowed type lover, Kit Hinrichs has been chagrined that so many people focus on the words without seeing the beauty, variety and emotional richness of the typeface itself. They can name graphic designers but not type designers.
Kit began the 365 Typography Calendar as a personal project to call attention to the typefaces and the designers who made them. Each month features a different face, with a brief biography of the designer and a call-out of his/her birthday on the appropriate day. Now in its 19th year, the typefaces in this current calendar were inspired by posters designed in the 20th and 21st Century, including some of the profession’s notable designers such as Milton Glaser, Paula Scher, Ben Shahn, Chermayeff & Geismar, John McConnell, Kit Hinrichs, Charles Coiner, Paul Davis and Richard Hess to name a few. The calendar, which has an ever-growing fan base, is sold in art museums including MoMA, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and other design-related stores, directly from our office, and also through Amazon.
The isolated numbers on a calendar allow viewers to appreciate a typeface as a distinctive object of design. Typeface choices range from the classic to the quirky; the beautiful to the grotesque.
