An avowed type lover, Kit Hinrichs has been chagrined that so many people focus on the words without seeing the beauty, variety and emotional richness of the typeface itself. They can name graphic designers but not type designers.
Kit began the 365 Typography Calendar as a personal project to call attention to the typeface and designer who made it. Each month features a different face, with a brief biography of the designer and a call-out of his/her birthday on the appropriate day. Now in its 15th year, the calendar includes choices suggested from designers at Studio Hinrichs, fellow Alliance Graphique Internationale members, Pentagram partners, and specific type designers including Jonathan Hoefler, Tobias Frere-Jones, Mathew Carter and others. The calendar, which has an ever-growing fan base, has been sold in art museums, Design Within Reach and other design-related stores, and through Amazon.
The isolated numbers on a calendar allow viewers to appreciate a typeface as a distinctive object of design. Typeface choices range from the classic to the quirky; the beautiful to the grotesque.
