<p>Following our work on their <a href="http://www.studio-hinrichs.com/work/packaging/dreyers.php" target="_blank">Dreamery</a> line, <a href="http://dreyers.com/main/index.asp?b=104" target="_blank">Dreyer’s</a> asked Studio Hinrichs to create the packaging and identity design for their new line of <a href="http://www.wonkaicecream.com/" target="_blank">Wonka<sup>™</sup> Ice Cream</a>, inspired by the classic <a href="http://us.penguingroup.com/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9780142418215,00.html?Charlie_and_the_Chocolate_Factory_Roald_Dahl" target="_blank">Roald Dahl book</a>. With flavors like Kerfuffle Truffle<sup>™</sup> and Kernelpuff Carmelstuff<sup>™</sup> Dreyer’s needed imaginative and fun packaging to reflect the clever concoction inside. We wanted an innovative way for Wonka™ to stand out, so we looked at what existed on the premium ice cream shelf and turned it on its head. Literally. The seven flavors are served in inverted ice cream cartons, which we swirled with bright kaleidoscopic colors surrounding the iconic wordmark. Wonka™ Ice Cream is currently available in Northern California and Nevada.</p>

<p>As a new non-profit, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/goodventures" target="_blank">Good Ventures</a> approached Studio Hinrichs in 2011 to create a logo for their philanthropic foundation. The organization seeks to not only improve the lives of the disadvantaged, but also to create and encourage transparency and effectiveness in the social sector. One of the top priorities of the foundation is to become a resource for people who wish to do more to help around the world. To date, their grants include gifts to the <a href="http://www.againstmalaria.com/" target="_blank">Against Malaria Foundation</a> and the <a href="http://givewell.org/international/top-charities/schistosomiasis-control-initiative" target="_blank">Schistosomiasis Control Initiative</a>. We designed an embracing and unifying logo for <a href="http://goodventures.org/" target="_blank">Good Ventures</a>, which simultaneously refers to their global cause and their desire to reach out to those who share their vision.</p>

When our good friend and internationally renowned photographer <a href="http://www.jockmcdonald.com/" target="_blank">Jock McDonald</a> decided to begin an interactive entertainment company with Linda Evans and Sandy Hewitt, they asked us to create a brand as they began their new business REAL/IMAGINE. With a social and ecological focus, REAL/IMAGINE seeks to create a global community through a broad spectrum of socially moving, heartfelt and hilarious art. Since a large portion of the company’s art will be user-generated, REAL/IMAGINE wanted a logo that was memorable but flexible enough to encompass the varying mediums that might be submitted by artists. Studio Hinrichs designed a logo to echo the intersection of the tangible with the intangible, the imaginary with the real. </p>

The company approached us to update their wordmark. Working together with their advertising agency, <a href="http://www.copacino.com/" target="_blank">Copacino + Fujikado</a>, we redesigned the typographic signature and introduced the icon of a <a href="http://www.birdweb.org/birdweb/bird/black_swift" target="_blank">Swift</a>, a bird native to area surrounding the Seattle-based company, to the previously imageless logo. Chosen for the bird’s endurance and agility, <a href="http://www.symetra.com/" target="_blank">Symetra</a> felt the Swift was a <a href="http://www.symetra.com/About/OurBrand/Pages/Brand.aspx" target="_blank">fitting representation</a> for a financial services institution on the rise.</p>

In 2011, Kit Hinrichs, together with an international jury, reviewed over 18,000 submissions before selecting 500 finalists. Last year, they asked Studio Hinrichs to create the three-book box set of the 2011 awards. The compendium consists of One Show Annual, Vol. 33, which recognizes the best in television, radio and print advertising; One Show Interactive, Vol. 14, which celebrates premier interactive design; and One Show Design, Vol. 5, which distinguishes notable graphic design. <p>The Studio Hinrichs team, together with editor <a href="mailto:dan.hayes@yahoo.com">Dan Hayes</a>, created <a href="http://www.na.sappi.com/" target="_blank"><em>Sappi</a>: The New Face of Special Effects</em> in conjunction with the <a href="http://www.studio-hinrichs.com/work/promotion/sappistandard.php">Sappi Standard 5: Special Effects</a>. This bright and fun video celebrates each of the 826 National storefronts and the important work the non-profit does <a href="http://826national.org/about/" target="_blank">providing writing and tutoring services</a> for kids. It takes a playful look at the many illustrated faces featured in the promotion. For the video, we included twenty-nine of the faces created by the talented illustrators who produced the images used to demonstrate the myriad special processes available in print. The selection of people, creatures and robots represents the variety of art styles found in the book. Set to an upbeat jazz number, the music underscores the colorful tactile imagery and the sense of exploration produced by the book.</p>

The UCSF Champions campaign introduces the public to the UCSF Medical Center&#8217;s plans for a new hospital and aims to educate and attract potential donors. Studio Hinrichs were engaged to create a voice, a visual identity and a compelling story this development campaign.
</p>
<p>
The program is based on champions: the people who, on a daily basis, bring the science, care and financial support to the UCSF hospital system. In the process of interviewing key players and developing the campaign, we were amazed by the quality and passion of the team that makes UCSF a progressive, award-winning medical institution, and we defined them as champions.
</p>
<p>
The use of black and white photography brings a substance to the people/subjects who are being celebrated and seemed an appropriate way to convey their contribution to the system. The scale of the book is slightly larger than normal to help communicate the idea of champions who are larger than life.

<a href="http://www.na.sappi.com/" target="_blank">Sappi Fine Paper North America</a> is kicking off their Standard 5 Tour on February 23 in San Francisco at the Cowell Theatre in Fort Mason. The tour promotes <em>The Standard 5: Special Effects</em>, an educational promotion that focuses on special printing techniques. The fifth edition of <em>The Standard</em> also features 826 National, a non-profit organization with tutoring and writing centers in 8 chapters across the country. Each center has a unique storefront that sells imaginative products such the Pirate Supply Store in San Francisco or the The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.</p>
<p>Each stop on the tour will unite designer Kit Hinrichs with a variety of designers, artists, and organizers in conversation to talk about their involvement with <em>The Standard 5</em> and 826 National.</p>
<p>The events have a suggested donation of $10 that will go towards 826 National and include a reception and presentation in the following cities:</p>

Nancy Johnson Productions came to Studio Hinrichs to update their identity and communication systems for its biannual San Francisco Antiquarian Book Print &#038; Paper show. The result is a classic Firmin Didot letterform filled with marbleized paper commonly found in the end papers of antiquarian books. This combination of contemporary typography together with the 17th century marbelized paper captured the essence of the event. The &#8220;A&#8221; was used on bookmarks, ads, posters, catalogs, and direct mail pieces.</p>
